I love the work of Lionel Walden, In fact he was painting many seascapes long before he came to Hawaii in 1911, and I have many of his early works in oil. Both on canvas and Artist Board as well. He use of the movement of the water along with his great view of waves gives you the feeling that you are right there while he was painting his work! I also have collected a few of his paintings he did in the home of Shirley Russell a young new artist he was teaching and staying with when he first came to Honolulu & the Kahala area near Diamond Head back in in 1918 to 1924 he also painted a fantastic small oil painting in 1922 of Shirley Russell as nice personal gift to her for her kindness. (A few days before she passed away I went to her her home to visit, and her son John Russell Sold it to me. It is now in a very special place to be taken care of? He taught Shirley the ways to paint the color of the waves & water that she learned to do from that time on in all her Seascapes in all her Hawaiian Oils & Watercolors from that time on, until today you can see the hand of L. Walden in all her works!! He was a great Painter and loved to share his knowledge with many of the the local artist that were in the Hawaiian Movement of Local Artist in the best period of the early Hawaiian art Movement 1880 to 1940's and we all are very lucky that he came to Hawaii t teach and paint the Hawaiian Islands & Volcano's too!
