This painting was purchased in the 1930's at Sotheby's in NYC by my Great Uncle of St.Thomas, Ont. Canada were it hung in his home until his death in 1952 and then moved to our home in St.Thomas until 1972 after my Grandmother (his sister) died. I grew up with this lovely painting over the mantel. I would love to know who bought it at the auction in 1972 in Toronto at Waddington's Auction in Oct. of that year and who bought it at Sotheby's again in 2007, and maybe the owner would like to know a bit more about it's past.

Hi Susan. Dawson was a true master. I'm sure the owner would be interested in the history of the painting. Such information adds value and authenticity. I doubt Sothebys would give out information about current owners but they might give the details of previous owners. hopefully the new owner will find this post.

Hi Jeronimus, I was actually so surprised to get a comment back on my letter. I would not mind telling you some of the things that I know about the picture as well as a question you may be able to answer for me... something that has been mistifying me all my life. How do I reach you besides by this posting. I don't want to ask just anyone.

I'm no expert on marine art; just an enthusiast, but I hope I can help.
